Do I Need to Upgrade My Electrical Service From 100 Amps to 200 Amps?

If you live in an older home, your electrical service may be 100 amps, while many newer homes are built with 200-amp service. Whether you need to upgrade depends on how much electricity your home uses today. It also depends on what you plan to add in the future, such as an EV charger, heat pump, or electric appliances.

What Does 100-Amp or 200-Amp Service Mean?

Your electrical service determines how much power your home can handle at one time. A 200-amp service provides more electrical capacity than a 100-amp service, which can be important as homes add more appliances, equipment, and technology.

That does not mean a 200-amp home uses twice as much electricity. It simply means more power is available when needed. Your electric bill is still based on how much electricity you actually use. For some homes, 100-amp service is enough. What matters is whether it can safely support everything you use at the same time, including appliances, heating and cooling systems, electronics, and other electrical equipment.

Why Are More Homes Using 200-Amp Service?

When Should a 200-Amp Upgrade Be Considered?

A service upgrade may be worth evaluating when you are making changes that will substantially increase your home’s electrical needs. Sometimes an upgrade is needed because the existing service does not have enough capacity. Other times, the existing service can accommodate the new equipment without an upgrade. The goal is to determine what your home actually needs rather than assuming a larger service is required.

How Is That Determined?

An electrician can perform a load calculation to evaluate the electrical demands of the home. A load calculation looks at the home’s existing electrical equipment along with anything being added. The result helps determine whether the current electrical service has sufficient capacity or whether additional capacity is needed. Depending on the home and the work being completed, a project may involve replacing the electrical panel, upgrading the electrical service, or both. This distinction matters because simply installing a larger electrical panel does not automatically increase the amount of electrical capacity available from the utility.
