Electrical Tips for Kitchen Safety

The kitchen, unfortunately, is where two-thirds of all home fires start. Here are tips to help you identify and correct potential hazards in your kitchen to stay safe:

  • Clean your stove and oven on a regular basis, including the exhaust hood and duct over the stove.
  • Do not keep towels, napkins, and potholders near the stove.
  • Ask your electrician which outlets need to be GFCI-protected.
  • Water and electricity do not mix – keep appliances away from the sink. And don’t plug in an appliance if it is wet.
  • For counter appliances, keep cords away from hot appliances such as the stove or a toaster.
  • Unplug counter appliances when you are not using them.
  • Take care of your refrigerator for energy savings and safety. Check behind your refrigerator to ensure there is enough room for air to circulate and vacuum the refrigerator coils every each quarter of the year.
  • In the event of the slightest shock turn the power off on the circuit breaker. Contact a licensed electrician before touching the appliance.
