Save Money/Energy this Fall

It is fall and we want to help you make preparations so that you can continue to save money on electricity and natural gas. Here are some of our energy and cost savings tips to help you get started!

Warm up your water heater. Wrapping it in an insulated blanket will reduce heating loss. Another good measure to take is to turn your water heater down to 120°F (also a good safeguard if you have children).

Let the sunshine in. Open blinds and curtains to warm your house naturally. It’s free!

Regulate your home’s temp. Set your thermostat no higher than 68°F when you are home and awake. Set it for lower when you are not. You can save up to 2% off your heating bill for every degree you lower your thermostat.

Clean your refrigerator. Refrigerators often use more energy than any other appliance but if you maintain it. Vacuum coils and make sure it is running at 41°F, which is optimal for food safety but not too cold to waste electricity.

Clean out your dryer. Lint build up in your dryer’s hose can increase energy use up to 30% – not to mention it is a fire hazard.

Shower vs. bath. Taking short showers will conserve on hot water consumption.

Install water-flow restrictors. Adding these to showerheads and faucets will conserve water and costs.

Check your windows, doorways and fireplace. Are there leaks that need to be caulked so that heat (and your hard earned money) isn’t escaping? Close the fireplace damper when not in use.

Make way for vents and radiators. Make sure furniture and drapes are not blocking these. To learn more, contact us for more information on specific ways your household can save money on your electricity bill.
