Stay Cool. Save Energy. Save Money.

Save money and energy this summer while keeping cool. Many of our tips are FREE to increase savings and reduce energy consumption. Others are just simple, cost-saving actions when it comes to your air conditioner. Hope you are all keeping cool while enjoying this HOT weather!

No air conditioning? Fans and ventilation strategies can help!

  • Easy quick tip: Since we live in a climate (thankfully) that cools off at night for the most part, open your windows after the sun goes down and keep them open in the morning, to let the cool air in.
  • A fan is a great way to push heat out as well. It is a small investment that can lower the temperature in your home by up to 10 degrees.
  • Use kitchen, laundry room and bathroom fans that are already installed in your home to remove heat and humidity through spot ventilation. This is the key: make sure the fans are vented to the outside, not just to your attic.
  • Take advantage of daylight instead of artificial lighting, but avoid direct sunlight. Window coverings can prevent heat from coming in during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Install efficient lighting. Incandescent lighting is a heat source. There are so many efficient lighting options and we are of course excited to talk about them! Give us a call and we can talk about what is right for your home and outdoor living space.
  • On hot days, avoid using the oven – BBQ, cook on the stove, use the microwave instead.
  • Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes to reduce the amount of times you need to run the machines throughout the week and consider a clothes line for drying. Sheets smell so good when they are air dried outside and it saves energy and $.
  • Reduce hot water use by taking showers rather than baths.
  • Turn down the temperature of your water heater to the warm setting (120°F). Water heating can account for 14% to 25% of the energy consumed in your home.
  • Think about the devices that may cause your home to heat up such as computers, gas stoves, hair dryers and try to reduce their use.
  • Seal cracks and openings to prevent warm air from leaking into your home. Caulking and weather stripping can be a great way to reduce air leaking in or out around doors and windows – this is also a good winter energy-saving tip when you are trying to keep warm air in.

If you have a cooling system, you will want to:

  • Strategize your thermostat settings. The smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill will be. Also, while you are away from your home keep your house warmer than normal. Lower the thermostat setting to 78°F only when you are at home and need cooling. There are many programmable thermostats with great technology to create maximum energy savings. Let us know if we can help find and install one that will work for you.
  • Turn off your cooling system at night and let the windows and fan do the cooling work.
  • Avoid setting your thermostat at a colder setting when you turn on your air conditioner. It will not cool your home any faster and could result in excessive cooling and unnecessary expense.
  • Use a ceiling fan in conjunction with air conditioning, a ceiling fan will allow you to raise the thermostat setting about 4°F without overheating. Just be sure to turn off your ceiling fan when you leave a room as fans cool people from the wind chill effect but they do not cool rooms.
  • Avoid placing lamps or TV sets near your room air-conditioning thermostat. The thermostat senses heat from these appliances, which can cause the air conditioner to run longer than necessary.
  • Vacuum your air conditioner filters or replace them regularly to remove dust so they run efficiently.
  • All year round, make sure that furniture and other objects are not blocking your vents.
  • Most importantly: Schedule regular maintenance for your air conditioner. Any water or malfunction can cause a short, which can cause a fire. The worst heat and safety hazard of all.
