Back in the late ’60s and early ’70s, the cost of copper surged, and aluminum became a popular substitute for branch wiring (the wiring that feeds outlets, lights, and switches). But aluminum wiring behaves very differently than copper.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), homes with aluminum wiring are 55 times more likely to have connections that reach “fire hazard conditions” than those with copper wiring.
